Phil Penman is a British photographer who has been living in New York for over 15 years. During his time in NYC Phil has photographed some iconic images that you may have seen.
One series of photos stands out and is probably one of the most remembered days in our present history of the world and to New Yorkers in particular.
On September the 11th 2001 Phil Penman was asleep at his home and he received a phone call to inform him that the World Trade Centre had been hit by a plane.
I met up with Phil in New York after finding common interests in photography and seeing his photos displayed at the Leica store in Soho, NY. I made contact with him over email, later we met and walked around New York. I asked him to give me his recollection of the day. This is Phil’s timeline of 9/11 with powerful and upsetting displays of confusion, heartbreak and a real feel for that moment in time, This is the first time Phil has ever spoke out about his experiences since 9/11.
